My Death Was Your Cleanest Mess

From the back cover

In a house ruled by her mother's obsessive cleanliness, Maeve has learned that a single speck of dirt can bring punishment. When her younger sister Naomi drops a greasy slice of pie on the kitchen floor, Maeve rushes to disinfect the mess before their mother returns. But Naomi twists the story, claiming Maeve threw the pie and insulted their mother's baking, and their mother believes her instantly, forcing the chemical-soaked pie into Maeve's mouth as punishment for lying.

As the disinfectant burns through her throat, Maeve's pleas are dismissed as more lies. Her mother takes Naomi to the Winter Wonderland resort and leaves Maeve behind, refusing to believe her even when she calls in agony during the night. Alone, Maeve collapses, coughing up blood, terrified not of dying but of the stain she cannot clean from the floor.

When she next becomes aware, she is standing unseen before the gates of Winter Wonderland, her fingers passing through her mother's coat like frost. She is dead, and still her first thought is that she never finished scrubbing the blood away.
