After her husband Jackson's first love becomes engaged, he leaves Avery right after their wedding to join a research team in Antarctica. She visits him sixty-six times over five years, then stops. When he suddenly reappears at a birthday party and sees her rounded belly, he erupts, accusing her of betraying him and demanding to know whose child she carries. Avery answers calmly that their separation allows for divorce.

Jackson drags her to his family's private hospital for a procedure, ignoring Grandma Nora's pleas. There they meet Phoebe, his long-cherished first love, who is pregnant and claims Jackson was always hers. When Phoebe pushes Avery, she begins to bleed, yet Jackson forbids any doctor from examining her and orders her bound to a bed, streaming the scene live as viewers urge punishment.

As a bodyguard raises a stick to strike her belly, a stranger bursts in, warning Jackson that Avery is not someone he can touch. Jackson recognizes his brother's bodyguard, and blood spills as Avery, desperate, prepares to reveal the child's true father.
