From the back cover

For three years, a mother has watched her six-year-old son Sammy fight for his life in the ICU, waiting for a matching donor heart. The money she raised — four hundred and fifty thousand dollars, gathered by selling her house and car and borrowing from relatives — was his only chance. Then her husband Rob signs a Do Not Resuscitate order and reveals he wired every cent to an underprivileged student named Chelsea for her semester in Paris.

When she calls the police, Rob pins her against the hospital wall, threatening to pull Sammy from the ICU and let him die at home unless she retracts the call. He insists Chelsea deserves the money, that passing the heart to another child builds grace, and that their son can simply wait. A new donor heart appears, but Rob refuses to reclaim the funds and moves to turn it down.

As she vows to sue him and expose everything, she asks whether he loves Chelsea. His answer is a slap across her face.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

My hand hovered over the dotted line of the surgical consent form, trembling so violently the tip of the pen blurred. Before the ink could even graze the paper, my husband’s hand clamped down on my wrist.

Three years. We had waited three agonizing years for a matching donor heart, watching the life drain out of our little boy. This was it. His only shot at survival.

And yet, Rob looked at me with deadened eyes and casually mentioned that the four hundred and fifty thousand dollars we’d scraped together—our son’s lifeline—had been wired to an underprivileged student's overseas tuition fund.
