From the back cover
Cameron has spent years waiting for a heart transplant while his mother, Dr. Penelope Gilbert, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, treats his failing heart as a minor inconvenience. When a donor heart finally arrives, it goes not to Cameron but to Fitch Connelly, an orphan student his mother has taken under her wing. At the press conference celebrating the surgery, she announces she has adopted Fitch as her godson and tells Cameron to call him his younger brother.
As the cameras roll, Cameron exposes the years of neglect: his myocarditis dismissed as a common ailment, his hospitalizations spent alone, the bed he needed held in reserve for Fitch. His father, Robert, urges him to fake composure for the reporters. When Cameron smashes his mother's award and demands to know why a stranger received the heart he waited three years for, she strikes him.
He collapses vomiting blood and wakes in the ICU with less than six months to live, while his mother's only concern is the damage his outburst has done to Fitch's recovery.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
The heart transplant was a success, and the local news was there to cover the miracle.
“Dr. Gilbert, we understand your biological son has been on the waiting list for three years…”
My mother, Dr. Penelope Gilbert, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, cut the reporter off with a practiced, saintly smile.
