When Lucy Simmons was five, she fell into a well and survived. Afterward her mother, Karen Simmons, was tormented by nightmares of the woman who had drowned there, demanding her daughter. So her parents held a ritual and made Lucy accept the dead woman, Rose Reynolds, as her mother, and call them Aunt and Uncle instead. For thirteen years she cooked, washed and carried for her sister, Emily Simmons, while going hungry herself. Then she learns the nightmares were a lie: the family was simply too poor, and the deception was to keep food for Emily.

Now Emily has been accepted into college and the family is moving to the city without Lucy. Her burned hand is dismissed, and on a shopping trip she is made to carry Emily's things and called a housekeeper. Left with too little for the bus fare, she walks the five miles home, until a car of village boys who once beat her pulls up and offers her a ride.

It doesn't matter. The woman from the well comes to see her every night. From now on, she's her new mom.
