My Sister Got Married and Divorced Eight Times

From the back cover

Shirley Bacon is thirty and has been married eight times, yet never divorced. Each husband died within a year of the wedding, and every fortune teller she consulted before the ceremony warned her she was destined to bring misfortune to her husbands. From a drowning in the village lake to a truck accident, a snakebite, pesticide mistaken for soda, and a body found gnawed in a ravine, the deaths cemented her reputation across the village. Some men still pursued her, even betting on whether they could survive a year.

Her younger sister Polly, whom Shirley raised like a mother, watched each loss break her. After the eighth husband fell to his death and his mother secretly fed Shirley aborticide, Shirley swore off marriage and planned to leave town for work. Then she met Maurice Congreve, a handsome, devoted colleague whose relentless courtship stirred her heart again. She has not told him about her past, and she is afraid of what loving him may cost.
