On what should have been their sixth wedding anniversary and his son Parker's fifth birthday, Miles watches the boy die on a mountain in the Catskills. Madeline, his wife, has vanished without a word, taking the only medical bag holding Parker's emergency asthma equipment. When Miles finally reaches her, she is tipsy and distant, and a man's voice cuts in to claim her for a welcome-home drink. Miles tells her their marriage is over.
He buries Parker alone, while Madeline and Sebastian Rossi fill their days with bars and parties. A week later Miles returns to their city estate carrying the urn, and finds Sebastian lounging in his living room. Madeline, annoyed he missed her calls, shrugs off her shattered phone and the cracked sandalwood bracelet Parker and Miles had carved for her.
When she finally asks where Parker is, Miles says he wants a divorce. She answers with arrogance, insisting Parker should choose. Miles tells her Parker isn't coming.
