Roy leads an expedition team into a desert wilderness to survey rare mineral resources. When brutal heat close to 158 °F strikes, he reaches for the electrolyte water he alone packed for emergencies—and finds his bottle swapped for urine. His wife, Amy Garner, gave his water to Ben Murphy, her childhood friend, saying Ben dehydrates more easily and that Roy can make do. Ben gulps it down and pours the rest over his face while Roy's vision blurs.

Roy signals for rescue and reports a robbery; Amy tries to cancel the call and pries at his eyelids for the iris scan. She slaps an oral rehydration packet from his hand, and when he punches Ben, she kicks him out of the vehicle. The others side with her, mocking his special forces training as an act. Trapped in the searing sand, his hand crushed in the window, Roy hears Ben admit Amy has long wanted a divorce—widowhood suits her better—before Ben slashes his arm and leaves him for the predators.

Bleeding and enraged, Roy lunges at Ben as the others drag him back and Ben points at the blood-stained knife.
