Audrey Kates is a judge, and her husband Jasper has kidney failure. When her first love, Gavin Shaw, suffers from uremia, Audrey uses her influence to pressure a hospital into giving him one of Jasper's kidneys. Jasper explains that a transplant would mean certain death for him, but Audrey hires a famous lawyer and wins a court ruling that sends him to the operating table.

As Jasper's kidney failure worsens, he dies alone in a forgotten corner of the hospital. His soul lingers beside Audrey, who stays by Gavin's side and never learns that the patient who died unclaimed was her own husband. Only Miranda Wenzel, the adoptive sister who once loved him, comes to claim his body.

When Miranda and Audrey meet in the hallway, Miranda says the dead man is her husband, leaving Audrey stunned. Gavin recovers and is discharged, surrounded by friends who tease Audrey about marrying him, while Jasper watches, his love for her finally gone.
