Leon returns home for the holidays to find slippers waiting for his father Dean Pratt, his mother Nancy Kerr, and his sister Luna Pratt, including a spare. His own pair is gone. His room has become Luna's, filled with her curtains, clothes, and trophies, and he is handed a thin blanket and told to sleep on the couch. His belongings have vanished one by one until he is treated as a guest in his own family.

When his advisor Bobby Newton offers him a place on a propulsion systems project at Nettle Base, requiring at least two years of isolation, Leon wonders whether anyone would notice his absence. His parents sign the consent form without reading it, and at a family dinner his allergy and achievements are brushed aside while Luna is praised.

Leon agrees to go, quietly counting the days until he can leave the house where no place remains for him.
