For three years, June has watched her husband Zachary leave her and their daughter Vivien to play stand-in father to the son of his ex, Dorothy Henson. Each time, his apology arrives as a $5.20 transfer. She has quietly kept every one of those receipts, telling herself patience would bring his heart home.

Then comes the preschool's Father's Day event. Zachary promised Vivien he would be there, but he vanishes, and June finds him in Dorothy's photo grid at an amusement park, captioned as the boy's best dad. On stage, Vivien is laughed at for having no father, and June takes the microphone herself.

When Zachary finally appears in the rain with a cake and excuses, June tells him she wants a divorce. He only laughs, asking what she will do alone without a job.
