From the back cover

At the gate of the Sears family home, Felix James is told that a man marrying in must kneel to the family's big yellow dog, Roy. His bride Anita Sears and her parents, Tyler Sears and her mother, treat the bow as an old blessing, and the watching relatives crowd in to see whether he will obey. When Felix refuses, he offers a custom of his own: the father-in-law should bow and pour the son-in-law a drink. The mood turns ugly, and Anita, who seems to have known all along, tells him to put up with it.

Felix locks himself in the wedding car and tells the driver to back out. Tyler Sears throws himself in front of the car, relatives attack the tires with scissors and fruit knives, and Anita threatens to drag his family through a smear campaign. His best man, Paddy Finch, tries to defend him and is set upon by George Sears and others, his clothes torn off.

Doused in dog urine and cornered, Felix pulls Paddy into the car. Anita is handed an axe and warns him to get out and kneel, or she will make the day hell for him.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

The wedding car had barely stopped at the gate before Anita Sears's mother was smiling and holding out a red cushion to me.

"Felix James, the way we do things around here, when a new son-in-law marries in, he has to kneel to the family's big yellow dog."

"It's a blessing. Means you'll hold this whole family up in the years to come, and never walk away."

"Come on. Kneel to old Roy there."

Tyler Sears was smiling too. "It's the old rule. Any man who marries into his wife's family has to do it."

I looked at Anita, asking her with my eyes to step in.
