On the drive back to my cheap off-campus apartment, Jett Coleman's expression was a study in shadow.

"Thank you for getting me out of that situation. Consider the black card a gift." His voice was low and troubled. "Even though Gia rejected me because of my possessiveness, she is the only person I have ever loved."

He sounded exactly like the tragic second male lead in every melodramatic novel—the one whose heart belongs only to the heroine.

The stream of comments was scrolling thick and fast:

[LOL. Does this cannon fodder really think she has the heir’s attention? She’s just a tool to make the heroine jealous.]

[Exactly. Jett has been obsessed with Gia since he first saw her. That’s why the proposal was such an insane public spectacle.]

[In the original plot, his possessiveness over the heroine was off the charts. He couldn't go a minute without seeing her.]

[Waiting for the cannon fodder to be discarded and return to her predetermined fate of dying poor.]

That last one startled me. I could see my own tragic future unfold: graduating, renting a cramped basement apartment, miserable commutes for a pitiful salary, subsisting on instant ramen, and wearing cheap, synthetic fabrics—my last shred of dignity.

I shuddered and looked up at Jett's sharp brow, his clean, powerful jawline. His eyes were dark, swirling with the ink-black storm of Gia's rejection. He was still lost in the image of the hero and heroine embracing.

I couldn’t let this money tree escape.

Mustering all my courage, I reached out to take his hand.

Snap!

An electric spark jumped between us. A sudden, crackling flash of manufactured intimacy.

Jett recoiled instantly, like he’d touched a live wire. He was utterly shocked, the dangerous aura surrounding him dissolving into bewilderment.

He stared at me, then at his hand, a thoughtful look crossing his face.

"What was that? I… I felt a static charge."

I flung myself into his arms, burying my head into his expensive, custom-made shirt.

"Yes! Because I am your soulmate! Your destiny!" I declared dramatically.

"Love at first sight is cheap. Love that grows over time is enduring. Just spend a little time with me, and you'll see how amazing I am."

Jett actually looked down at me nestled in his arms. After a moment of genuine hesitation, he wrapped his arms tightly around me.

He muttered softly, "Could... could you really be the one?"

We stayed locked in the embrace for a long time. In a place Jett couldn't see, I subtly tugged down the hem of my synthetic, fast-fashion dress—just to make sure the static cling didn't strike again.
