Blake McGee is the true heir of the McGee family, returned after ten years missing. On the day scores are released, Blake ties for first place in the state with Pete McGee, the adopted son who has lived in luxury for over a decade. Their parents, George and Lisa McGee, and sister Alexis McGee, promise to treat them equally, booking two private rooms for a send-off dinner and letting each choose.

Blake, raised poor and still afraid of it, picks the Gilded Room. Pete agrees, then weeps that he fears being cast aside, and the whole family pressures Blake to give way. Blake takes the Laurel Room instead, and finds it empty while laughter drifts from the room next door. A bank card follows, and at a family gathering Blake is mocked for an off-the-rack suit while Pete is praised.

When Alexis accuses Blake of ingratitude, Blake answers that being lost for ten years is no small debt. The clothes and the card are not compensation; they are a muzzle. Blake touches the cold bank card and resolves not to stay silent.
