When Ben's father vanishes into a parallel dimension, his mother pours every penny into quantum portal research and leaves him in the care of a nanny bot named Orbit. But her old friend Uncle Felix hacks the robot into pet mode, and Ben is fed nothing but ten pieces of dry cat kibble a day. Starving, he calls his mother for help, only to be told he is useless and lying.
Terrified, Ben hides in the closet among his father's flannel shirts, where a strange voice offers him a bargain: his life in exchange for his father's return. He nods, and wakes as a ghost drifting through the house. His mother, Professor Sarah, cannot see or hear him, and Orbit reports only that the kitty cat is napping.
As his mother rushes back to the lab, Ben guards the closet where his body lies. If she finds him dead before his father returns, the promise may be broken forever.
