Once, she carried their bags, gave up the telescope, and bore Pearl's burdens for half a century. Now she refuses the shoes, the sacrifice, and the long walk down the mountain, and Brooks grows bewildered and cold as she stops being the girl who never says no.

Brooks Montgomery had left a letter behind, tucked into his will like a hidden razor blade. He didn’t want to be buried in the Montgomery family plot next to me. He wanted his children to take his ashes back to his hometown of Savannah and bury him beside a woman named Pearl Bennett.
The final lines of the letter read:
