On the junkyard planet Brink, a dying young woman named Ari survives by scavenging scrap dumped from the perfect world of Prime. Among the heaps she finds a shattered android, reassembles him, and fits him with legs from K70, the old maintenance bot who raised her. He stays dead until a beam of raw sunlight through a hole in the atmosphere reboots him. He calls himself K90, and he repays her by repairing K70 and bringing food from the collapsed city.

When K90 offers K70 a system overwrite to extend his operational life, Ari agrees, desperate to keep her only family. But the update wipes K70's memory files, leaving him cold and calling her an unauthorized subspecies. K90 restores him, and Ari embraces K90 in gratitude.

Then, while scavenging for parts, K90 vanishes.
