Stanley Sanchez, one of the most powerful men in Harbor City, brings a college student named Cindy Pruitt into his home as his wife Teresa's personal nutritionist. Cindy puts Teresa on an all-liquid cleanse of homemade green smoothies, and every household and medical expense must pass Cindy's approval. Over three years, Teresa becomes pregnant six times, and malnutrition costs her every pregnancy.

When Teresa is pregnant for the seventh time, she bleeds heavily and begs Stanley to take her to the hospital. Cindy calls the trip a waste of money, and Stanley hangs up, telling Teresa that Cindy speaks for him. That night, Teresa loses the seventh child. Then she overhears Stanley admit he lets Cindy control his home because he wants Cindy to stay with him.
