A bitter, incredulous laugh scraped past my lips.

That was the leverage they had wielded over us for nearly fifteen years. When Allison was a child, she had slipped away from her nanny in a crowded downtown square. Brenda Campbell, an opportunistic passerby, happened to find her sitting on a bench and brought her back just ten minutes before our private security detail swept the block. Ever since, the Campbell family had treated that minor act of human decency as an open line of credit.

The moment Brett graduated from college, he arrived on our doorstep with empty pockets and a bottomless sense of entitlement. Allison charged endless platinum cards to buy him Rolexes, tailored suits, and weekend getaways to Aspen.

Every time I pushed back, Allison would throw her arms around my neck, murmuring softly: "Dad, they saved my life. Money is just paper. Think of it as paying back a cosmic debt so my conscience can rest easy. Don't be mad at him."

I had swallowed my pride. I had swallowed my doubts.

And now, Brett had convinced himself that my home, my marriage, and my wife's life's work belonged to him by divine right.

"Debts belong to the debtor," I said, my voice dangerously low. "If you think a fifteen-minute stroll in a public park entitles you to our lives, then let Allison sell her own blood and kidneys to pay you back. You don't get another cent from me."

Allison’s face finally shifted, noticing the dangerous edge in my posture. She turned on Brett, snapping with rehearsed impatience: "Go to the guest wing, Brett! Stop disrespecting my father!"

She hurried to my side, her manicured hands resting on my shoulders, rubbing them with soothing, practiced strokes. "I'm sorry, Dad. Please. You know how hard it was for him growing up poor. He just gets anxious about security. Don't take it to heart."

She had been my daughter for over twenty years. I had held her hair back when she was sick; I had taught her how to drive; I had stayed up all night helping her with college applications.

I swallowed the bitter lump in my throat, telling myself she was just young, just blinded by infatuation. I warned her never to let him speak to me like that again, but the poison had already settled in my ribs.

Late that night, unable to sleep, I dialed Katherine’s private line. She was halfway across the world, finalizing an acquisition in Zurich.

When I told her what had happened, her reaction was far sharper than mine.

"I’ve told you for years, Peter—Allison was born with a rotten core," Katherine said, her voice tight with exhaustion and disgust. "You're the only one who has ever been soft on her. The moment she realized she didn't share your blood, you felt so guilty for her insecurities that you let her call you her 'stepdad' to make her feel grounded. And look at her now. She honestly believes you're an interloper stealing what's hers."

Katherine paused, a heavy sigh crackling through the receiver. "I knew this day would come. The revocation of the adult adoption papers is in the false bottom of your nightstand. She's twenty-six years old, Peter. We don't owe her our lives."

After I hung up, I pulled the heavy manila envelope from the drawer.

I stared down at the crisp, legal language—"Petition for Dissolution of Adult Adoption". Cold. Final. Irreversible.

A memory flashed behind my eyelids: seven-year-old Allison, clutching a battered teddy bear, looking up at me with wide, teary eyes and whispering, "Daddy, will you stay forever?"

My chest ached with an agonizing, phantom tenderness. With a trembling hand, I slid the papers back into the drawer and shut it. I couldn't bring myself to do it.
