Lucille Dickerson takes her clients to Harborview House, a restaurant she trusts, and settles a twenty-thousand meal with her card. Then the server presents a second bill: two hundred thousand, run up by a mother-in-law she does not have. Lucille is single, and she refuses to pay a charge that is not hers.

The manager, Janet Gilbert, insists the woman is Lucille's mother-in-law and that she has dined there with her before. When Lucille stands firm and calls the police, Janet has the doors locked, declaring no one leaves until the bill is paid. Her clients, long-standing partners, stay and back her.

Lucille asks for the surveillance footage to prove the claim, but Janet says the cameras have been down. Cornered, Janet orders the guards to pin everyone down and seize their luxury watches to cover the tab.

The server looked at me with a perfectly rehearsed smile.

I just frowned.
