As Christmas approaches, five-year-old Sophie insists she saw Santa Claus climb out of the chimney. But the figure she describes has four legs, spider-like fingers with too many joints, and a lumpy, moving sack on its back. Her older sister Chloe is the only one who takes the story seriously, while their parents dismiss it as imagination.

When Chloe posts about it online, a user named NocturneNotes warns her that the thing is dangerous and gives her three rules: on Christmas Eve, from 11:30 PM to 2:00 AM, the whole family must pretend to sleep by the tree; they cannot truly fall asleep, or they will die; and no matter what they hear or feel, they must never open their eyes. With two days left until Christmas, Chloe must convince her family of the danger before the visitor returns.
