Sarah grew up in the shadow of her younger sister Lily, the favored child whose dance lessons and bright future consume the family's money and affection. Sent to college in New York with a weekly allowance of six hundred dollars a month, Sarah survives on the cheapest food and borrowed pads, her bank account never holding more than twenty dollars.

When her mother refuses to pay for a bus ticket home, Sarah takes a summer job at a motel near campus. There her boss secretly photographs her naked, and when she tells her mother, the woman forces her to settle, blaming Sarah for the violation and slapping her when she asks what would happen if Lily were the victim.

Now Sarah stands in a police station, her cheek burning, as her mother calls her manipulative and compares her to the sister she could never match.

Tears filled my eyes but refused to fall. I looked at her, stunned. "What if this happened to Lily?"
