Fresh from prep school and bound for NYU, Blaire is set up by her jet-setting parents, Richard and Catherine, in a pre-war condo in the Village, with Mrs. Albright installed as live-in housekeeper. The arrangement sours when Mrs. Albright learns the price of Blaire's new handbag and accuses her of squandering her own son's wages, though Blaire's trust fund pays for everything.

When designer clutches vanish from the closet, Mrs. Albright admits she sold them, insisting Blaire must learn thrift before marrying her son. Blaire calls the police. Later, Mrs. Albright proposes holding Blaire's money herself, and when Blaire moves to dismiss her, she drops to her knees, begging to keep the job her family depends on.

Blaire must decide how much of this boundary-crossing she can tolerate before the arrangement collapses entirely.
