From the back cover

A young woman named Harper is working on a copywriting draft when her mother, weeping, announces that Harper is not her biological child and that her real parents have come to take her home. Harper's response is to take her mother's phone and delete the melodramatic novels from her reading history, exposing the whole scene as an act. But then her four-year-old brother Leo bursts in, insisting a real girl is downstairs claiming to be the family's true daughter.

The girl, Chloe Jenkins, looks exactly like their mother, and soon the father, Arthur, and older brother, Declan, rush home. The father calmly reveals he already knew, while the mother's horrified shriek suggests a long-ago hospital mix-up. Chloe kneels and begs to stay as a maid, yet behind closed doors she glares at Harper with venom, scheming to drive her out before the DNA results arrive.

Harper refuses to leave until the test confirms the truth, even as Chloe's petty tricks and staged accidents escalate. In a house where everyone seems to be performing, only Harper seems unwilling to play along.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

My mom was stunned. My older brother was stunned. I was stunned.

My brother waved his hand dismissively, declaring he’d take us all to get a DNA test.

My mom, her legs weak, immediately called my dad: "Arthur, come home quick! Our daughter might have been switched at birth!"

My dad was unusually calm: "I know."

"How could you possibly know?!"

"Didn't you complain that she was crying too loud and told me to change her? So I swapped her for one that didn't cry."
