Casey has spent years absorbing her father Frank's drunken rages, watching her mother flee and her little sister Hallie retreat into shock. She endures the beatings with one plan: finish school, take her saved tuition money, and vanish with Hallie in the middle of the night. Then Frank finds the money and demands it, announcing he has arranged for her to work at a poultry plant instead of going to college.
When Casey refuses, Frank rips off his belt. His drinking buddy Silas urges her to kneel and apologize, and the relatives flood her phone with demands that she honor her father. Casey swings a lead pipe, leaving Frank with seventeen stitches and a concussion, and Silas warns her that Frank will break her once he is released.
The family elders issue an ultimatum: beg forgiveness at the hospital and surrender the tuition money. Casey answers with a single word, then walks into the room with a baton hidden in her sleeve.
