On her due date, a pregnant doctor is stabbed in the obstetrics ward by Isaacson, her husband Blake's depressed ex-girlfriend. Blake, a doctor himself, crouches beside Isaacson first, dismissing his wife's wound as superficial and giving Isaacson the two bags of blood reserved for the delivery. He presses her blood-covered hand onto a pre-printed settlement agreement, then carries Isaacson away.

In the operating room, the bleeding will not stop. Dr. Waco fights to save her, but the blood bank reports that Blake already signed for the backup blood. The fetal heartbeat fades, and the mother's heart follows. One wall away, Blake tends the scratch on Isaacson's elbow, telling her the law will not hold her accountable and that his wife is only sulking.

Unclaimed in the morgue, she drifts back to him, watching him condemn a dead woman in the gentlest voice while the nursery light still burns at home.

But Blake crouched down first in front of Isaacson, whose arm had a scratch.

Blake looked up and glanced at me, his tone calm:

"Her wound didn't hit any organs. She can hold on for now. Isaacson has a coagulation disorder. Even a minor scratch might not stop bleeding. Her situation is more urgent.
