Reading Julian's letter, she finds no mention of herself, only a closing line addressed to a sister. She lets the marriage contract fall into the river and tells the captain to continue to New Orleans.

In the bustling city, Sarah reopens her bakery and begins to live for herself, weighing the years she spent supporting Julian against the life she has finally chosen.
