Natalie was born with a secret gift: she can smell what people feel. Lies carry the sour scent of spoiled milk, jealousy the metallic bite of rusted iron, guilt the dampness of cellar mold, and love a sweet, golden warmth like honeyed vanilla. She first breathed that sweetness when she and Garrett fell in love, and she married him believing it would never fade.
But the sweetness vanished, replaced by a thick, choking bitterness. Garrett blames work, the mortgage, the endless meetings at the firm. He retreats behind the closed door of his study, answers almost none of her messages, and forgets their fifth wedding anniversary. Then he rushes out with the blueberry cake she baked, and Natalie follows him.
At a convenience store she finds him comforting a weeping woman: Keira, the girl she has sponsored for nearly ten years. The scent of a honeymoon phase drifts from them, and Garrett promises Keira a place at his side. Natalie can smell every feeling in the room, and none of them are hers.
