From the back cover
When the Sullivans finally bring their biological son Chester home, the son they raised in his place, Edward Sullivan, refuses to welcome him. To keep things fair, Chester's parents settle every decision by having him draw from blind boxes—and every draw comes back a refusal, postponing his welcome-home party and then costing him his engagement to Zoe Ludwig, who turns to Edward instead.
Only when Chester overhears Edward thanking his father in Franich for rigging the boxes does he understand the draws were never fair. Thomas Sullivan and Abigail Lawson assume Chester, raised abroad by his adoptive father Howard Jordan, cannot understand the language. Instead of confronting them, Chester quietly makes a call, unwilling to keep enduring a household that shoves him aside, blames him for Edward's cruelty, and leaves him burned and alone.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
Left with no choice, my parents have me draw lots in the form of blind boxes just to be fair.
However, I draw negative responses all three times, so they postpone the ceremony by a week.
Five days later, my girlfriend, Zoe Ludwig, drops by to discuss our engagement.
Edward fell in love with her at first sight and immediately demanded that she marry him instead.
