On her tenth birthday, Lily finds two blood-red lines in the blue diary her mother gave her: a warning that her father Maury will come home in a gray shirt smelling of gardenia perfume, and a prediction that her mother Sarah will die in ten years. The diary reveals only two sentences a day, telling Lily what will happen but never how to save her mother.
When Maury's mother Helen demands Sarah's paycheck card, Lily hides it under the kitchen sink. Maury sides with Helen, and Sarah finally refuses him for the first time. Then the diary warns that Maury will treat Sarah so well she will almost forget the cruelty — and at an upscale dinner he introduces Rachel, the new sales manager, who wears the gold bracelet Sarah never received.
Lily can see what is coming, but the diary offers no way to change it.

On my tenth birthday, two blood-red lines appeared in my diary:
[Do not make a wish for Dad to come home.]
[Ten years from today, Mom dies.]
I thought it was a prank and shoved the diary into my backpack. But after midnight, it flipped open on its own.
[At 11:00 PM tonight, Dad will come home wearing a gray dress shirt.]
[Do not let Mom ask about the gardenia perfume on his collar.]
At exactly eleven, Maury walked in wearing that gray shirt, reeking of gardenia perfume. Sarah cautiously asked about the smell.
