A hunched sixty-five-year-old woman named Yolanda drives them off with a broom, splints his broken leg, and takes him home to her small, spotless apartment in a run-down complex, naming him Cole.

Her son Ethan arrives with Ava, the woman he calls a caretaker. The moment Yolanda leaves for the market, they ransack the flat for the deed to her house, hunting two million dollars in gambling debts. Ethan plans to forge a power of attorney and sell his own mother as a bride to Winston, a violent man who has put his last two wives in the hospital.

Cole attacks Ethan's face and is kicked into a wall. When Yolanda returns, Ethan demands she get rid of the cat; she refuses, and he storms out. Bleeding, Cole drags at her pant leg, desperate to show her the deed is gone.
