When Grace was eight, a prank by her younger sister Alice left silver poison eating away at her heart. To save her, her father knelt ninety-nine days at the Temple of the Moon Goddess and won two moonstone pendants that hold the poison at bay. Since then Alice has been the family pariah, while Grace's mother quit her work as a healer to replenish the pendants' magic at the Moon Temple.

On the day registration for the Imperial Academy closes, a thunderstorm drains the portal's power crystal. Grace's mother tears the pendant from her neck and pours its magic into the portal, then locks Grace in her room, believing a backup pendant remains. But Alice had borrowed it for her graduation ball and never returned it. As the silver poison spreads, a bookshelf crashes down on Grace, and her family outside mistakes her silence for a jealous tantrum.

Only her father, home at last, lingers at her door with berries, while Alice quietly tells lies that turn her mother further against her.
