From the back cover
On the day her daughter turns one month old, a woman's husband, Lorenzo Falcone, Don of the Falcone Family, banishes her to the exile-farm in the forgotten hinterland after his old flame Camilla accuses her of poisoning Camilla's infant. A month later Lorenzo brings the whole bloodline to collect her, expecting remorse. Instead he finds her on the pasture, cradling a newborn calf and calling it her baby, kissing the big yellow cow's face and asking what it and their daughter want for dinner.
Lorenzo is enraged, certain she is playing mad to sicken him. Camilla kneels and weeps, blaming herself in words that cut off a half-second too cleanly whenever she glances away to see who is watching. When Lorenzo tries to tear the calf from her arms, she bites his hand hard enough to draw blood, and the soldiers at the gate go rigid.
She alone knows what no one else does: Camilla destroyed her own child and hung the guilt around her neck. Now the Don must decide whether his exiled wife has truly lost her mind, or whether she is the last witness to something far worse.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
In a fit of rage, my husband, Don of the Falcone Family, banished me to the exile-farm out in the forgotten hinterland, the slaughter compound where the disgraced are sent to "learn what real motherly love is." A month later he brought the whole bloodline out to collect me. When he saw me gently coaxing a newborn calf across the mud, he nodded, satisfied. "Looks like a month out here has finally put some real mothering in you."
