From the back cover
Roxy's family has long been bound to her uncle's household by a strange "Double Effect": whenever her parents gain something, her uncle's family mysteriously gains twice as much. The two families live side by side, their children in the same school, their fates compared at every turn. Her grandmother, convinced by a fortune teller that Roxy's fate clashes with her cousin Brandon's, has treated her as a jinx since birth.
On the last day of the college entrance exams, Roxy drinks spiked water and endures stomach cramps to finish her test. Moments later, paramedics carry Brandon from another hall, his body failing spectacularly. At the hospital, Grandma blames Roxy for his collapse, and the family's old resentment erupts. Then Uncle Dave's frantic calls begin, asking whether anything happened while her father was driving, and a scratched bumper and a friend's photo hint at something stranger still.
As Brandon's humiliation spreads online and the adults trade blame, Roxy starts to wonder what the Double Effect truly costs, and who is really paying for it.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
My uncle’s family bound themselves to us with a "Double Effect" system.
If my dad earned $10,000, my uncle’s stock account would mysteriously gain $20,000.
If my mom got a facial, my aunt’s rough skin would become twice as smooth for no reason.
My family scrimped and saved for years to buy a spacious condo. Immediately, my uncle’s family bought a townhouse in the same complex.
