While wandering the wilderness, Minnie and her younger sister Charlotte Forrester stray into the territory of supernatural beings. Charlotte clings to the elegant elf Elwin Duskwood, while the scarred wolfman Morgan Nightshade pulls Minnie away. Charlotte does not know that Elwin leads a poor tribe of half-elves, while Morgan is a wolf tribe Highlord. In one life, Minnie bore Morgan a rare silver wolf and became Highlady, while Charlotte starved and poisoned her in jealousy. Now both sisters wake again at the moment they first trespassed.

Charlotte throws herself at Morgan, praising his strength and promising she can conceive a silver wolf within half a year. Morgan takes her away, and Minnie follows Elwin to the half-elves' leaking treehouses, where he shyly offers her his dinner. Charlotte sends mocking word of her villa and roasted meat, then summons Minnie to her hurried marriage ceremony, flaunting her new rank.

As Charlotte gloats, a young half-elf runs up, begging Elwin to save his vomiting brother.

Before I can react, a wolfman with a scar on his face wraps his arm around my waist and leads me away.

Charlotte, who judges others by appearance, is unaware that the male elf—Elwin Duskwood—belongs to a tribe of half-elves. Half-elves are beautiful but possess no real capabilities. They are considered a marginalized group among elves and struggle to make ends meet every day.

On the other hand, the wolfman—Morgan Nightshade—is a mid-tier wolf tribe's Highlord.
