The living room went dead silent.
I watched the micro-expressions flicker across their faces. The panic. The frantic eye contact. The sudden, suffocating awkwardness.
Sarah was the first to recover, clearing her throat to break the tension. “Oh, really? Liam did text me earlier saying he found a new job, but I had no idea it was at your company.”
Right on cue, my parents and sister jumped in to back her up.
“Wow, what a coincidence. Sarah just mentioned it to us before you walked in,” my dad lied smoothly.
“Yeah, exactly,” Mia said, entirely too loud. “We literally just found out.”
I stood there, looking at these four people. My blood relatives. My wife. In that moment, they felt like total strangers.
Two years ago, Liam Bennett attended our wedding as a "friend of the bride." At first, I thought he was just a distant cousin or an old college buddy. It wasn't until later that I realized he was her childhood sweetheart—the phantom third person in our relationship.
After we got married, Liam would occasionally drop by the house. Strangely, it was almost always when I wasn't around.
Once, I was out of state on a business trip on Sarah’s birthday. I called her that evening from my hotel room, feeling awful. “I’m so sorry I can’t be there, babe. I promise I’ll make it up to you the second I’m back.”
“It’s okay, Ethan,” she had said sweetly. “Your parents and Mia are here. We’re having a quiet night.”
But right before she hung up, I heard Mia’s voice in the background, crystal clear: “Sarah, come here! Look at the surprise Liam brought you!”
He had been there. None of them had told me.
At the time, I brushed it off. I told myself they had known each other since they were kids. It was just a birthday. Plus, my whole family was there. What was there to worry about?
But standing in my living room now, the reality washed over me like ice water. The hierarchy in this house had been established a long time ago, and I was at the bottom of it. They had looked me in the eye, lied to my face, and skipped my celebration—just to throw a party for another man.
