The next morning, his phone woke us up.
The voice on the other end was hype: "Boss! That kid is at the school gate! Hurry!"
My owner woke up instantly, threw on his eye-blinding orange jacket, grabbed his keys, and rushed out.
Annoying.
I leaped off the cat tree and bit his baggy pant leg.
"Tsk!"
He stumbled, looked down at me, and scratched his head in frustration.
"Stop it! I'm in a hurry!"
I clamped down on the fabric, growling a warning deep in my throat.
He paused, then slapped his forehead. "F*ck! Forgot to feed you!"
He rushed back and poured half a bowl of kibble.
"There! Eat!"
He turned to leave again.
I bit his pant leg again, precise and firm, pawing at his shoe with determination.
"???"
He looked at the full bowl, then at me, confused and frantic.
"Fine!"
He scooped me up and stuffed me into his open jacket.
Zip. The zipper went up to his neck, leaving only my head exposed.
Our destination wasn't far—an alley near a school side gate.
His lackey, Tank, and a few others had cornered a boy in a school uniform.
The boy was thin and scholarly, calm despite the situation.
In my vision, white text floated above his head: [Male Lead: Julian Song].
I immediately turned to look at my owner.
[Second Male Lead: Lucas Lu].
Second male lead?
Experience told me: cannon fodder, tragic ending.
No way! He's my poop scooper!
Lucas shoved me into Tank's hands, stepped forward, and reached for Julian's collar!
I struggled free from Tank's grip.
"Owww!"
Lucas yelled in pain, pulling his hand back. A set of clear teeth marks adorned his wrist.
He looked down in shock to see me landing gracefully.
"Boss! Why'd you bring a cat to a fight?!"
Tank and the others stared, eyes wide.
Lucas was furious. He picked me up by the scruff, lightly tapping my head with his other hand. "Ungrateful wretch! I feed you, shelter you, and you bite me for an outsider?!"
Before he could finish—
Wee-woo—wee-woo—
A police car pulled up.
