After eight failed IVF attempts, a wife and her husband, Liam Walker, pursue adoption at last. During the home visit, the caseworker finds that Liam already adopted a daughter three years ago. Liam calls it a proxy adoption for his boss, a claim that unsettles his wife, who knew nothing of the child.

She demands answers. Liam insists the girl, Rosie, is his boss's love child, hidden to protect a fragile wife abroad, and that custody will soon be transferred. He begs her to trust him, invoking their years of heartbreak and infertility. She agrees to meet the child and her mother, Holly.

At the restaurant, Rosie's features, especially her nose, echo Liam's own. The resemblance lodges a cold doubt in the wife's heart, and she cannot tell whether his calm certainty is reassurance or something far worse.

The final step in the adoption process was a home visit. The caseworker looked at my husband, Liam, and me, a hint of doubt in her eyes.

“You two seem like an excellent match, but your file shows that Mr. Walker adopted a daughter three years ago? Where is the child now?”

I froze. “That’s impossible. This is our first application.”

Liam, however, offered an awkward laugh. “Oh, that was a proxy adoption for my boss. His circumstances made it difficult for him to have her under his name, so she was temporarily registered under mine.”
