At sixty, Dr. Evelyn Reed returns to her homeland to take up a professorship at Archwood University, expecting a quiet life with her husband Richard and son Leo. Instead, the two men she loves most drag her before the Tribunal, charging her with treason, intellectual theft and betrayal of the state. The penalty, if proven, is summary execution.

Richard urges her to sign her patents over to Catherine Kane and accept twenty years in prison. Leo calls her a traitor and demands she divorce his father. Catherine watches from the front row, smiling. Evelyn refuses to bend, yet asks that the proceedings be held in private.

The Tribunal grants four chances to prove the charges. Richard's first memory, of a scholarship forty years ago, collapses when Evelyn's own memory reveals who truly lost that place.
