Ten years after their divorce, Mia calls John Miller all night; he answers but says nothing. The next morning, in a torrential rain, he arrives at her door only to tell her to stop bothering him. She has late-stage cancer, and her apartment, the two-bedroom they once bought together, has gone unchanged and neglected.

When she collapses at her desk and wakes to a diagnosis, she endures treatment alone: injections, chemotherapy, vomiting, hair loss. As visitors thin out, she realizes the one thing she still wants is to see John Miller once more. She shows him her diagnosis and payment receipts, begging him to stay with her for three days, and he finally agrees.

At the cinema where they first held hands, he pulls away; at their old restaurant, he says he no longer likes the dishes she orders. She keeps talking anyway, and the food she swallows has no taste at all.
