Brooke's internship contract is nearly up, and she expects to renew it. Days before the deadline, her boss, Dustin Kline, asks her to cut her project bonus and hand her work to Sandy Richmond, the company's new department manager. When Brooke refuses, he threatens to withhold her salary.

Dustin claims Brooke is too young and inexperienced to lead, but everyone knows Sandy is his girlfriend and that Brooke built the project herself, even persuading her client—secretly her father, Ian Sullivan—to fund it. Cornered, Brooke agrees to the handover, then watches the launch event turn into a disaster when the client refuses to pay the remainder.
