After donating a kidney to save his father-in-law, Caleb Barnes is shoved into a dusty guest room the day he is discharged. His wife, Nina Dawson, calls his centipede-like scars disgusting and orders him to stay out of sight, while her relative Theo Reynold moves into the master bedroom and mocks him openly. When Caleb's wound tears open and festers, Nina ignores his pleas and sends him out for pastries instead of care.

As his infection worsens, Caleb clings to the military medal his dying mother left him and calls Commander Kathryn Jennings, the woman who owes his family her life, asking her to marry him.
