For eight years, Harrison Sterling and Brianna Everly held a wedding every year, yet never once obtained a marriage certificate. Brianna claimed she feared marriage, and Harrison waited patiently for her to be ready. At the eighth ceremony, however, he notices the name embroidered on her dress is not his but that of his best friend, Leon Stratford.

When Harrison confronts his brother Dominic, he learns the truth: the yearly weddings were Leon's idea, the legal marriage already belongs to Leon and Brianna, and everyone around him has known all along. His parents urge him to be grateful for the life he has been given, and Brianna dismisses the certificate as a mere piece of paper.

After the ceremony, a social media post from Leon reveals nine weddings with Brianna, each utterly unlike the eight identical ones Harrison endured. Harrison throws away his ring, discards a mold-covered wedding dress, and applies to an overseas violin ensemble. Then, outside a hospital, he overhears Leon and Brianna celebrating her pregnancy, and Leon spots him.
