Ten years after the zombie outbreak, the last survivors of a small town hide in an abandoned coal mine, licking moisture from the cave walls. Of the eighty who fled underground, only seven remain: Luke, his childhood friend Mack, the Mayor, the accountant Gary, the widow Martha, her eight-year-old son Toby, and a sick old man.
When Luke pries a plastic tag from the rock in the sealed Pit Seven, the words Props Department and a purchase date of October 2032 stare back at him. The world ended in 2024. The Mayor, who poured the cement that sealed Pit Seven eight years ago, admits he felt thick, new cables in the fissures and told no one. Luke orders the wall torn down.
Hours of swinging picks open a crack. Through it drifts radio static, and air that smells warm and rich, nothing like rot or moss.
