Adam proposes to Valerie in a dimly lit pool hall, his voice flat, with one condition: she must never interfere with his playing. She agrees, dizzy with joy that their seven-year relationship is finally crossing the finish line. But on the eve of their engagement he doesn't come home, and she finds him coaching another girl, Leah, his hands on her hips, adjusting her stance.
It wasn't the game he didn't want her interfering with. It was Leah. Back at their apartment, Adam asks to postpone the engagement ceremony until after the World Snooker Championship, so he can focus on training Leah. It is the seventh time he has postponed. He offers to sign the papers at the courthouse first, and Valerie, catching the flicker of relief on his face, refuses.
She remembers the alley where she once took a blow meant for him, the ribs it broke, the lung it punctured. To him she was never a partner, only a debt. When Leah appears at their door, frightened and tearful, Adam softens for her at once.
