From the back cover
At the annual Kids’ Charity Art Gala, Chloe’s colleague Sarah begs her to move her daughter Lily’s painting to the center of the hall, claiming the seven-year-old has leukemia and wants one last beautiful memory. In a past life, Chloe agreed, the painting turned out to be plagiarized, Sarah blamed her, and the CEO fired her before a chandelier crushed her to death.
Now Chloe has lived it again. She hands Sarah an originality waiver: sign it, or the painting goes to the back of the line. Sarah sobs, rages, and accuses Chloe of being jealous, bitter, and heartless toward a dying child. Director Victoria orders Chloe to hang the painting anyway and takes full responsibility.
Chloe refuses, photographs Victoria’s signed approval form, and watches the gala open with Lily’s suspiciously professional kitten painting in the center spot.
Inside the book Opening excerpt
"My daughter Lily has leukemia," she choked out, clutching my sleeve. "Can we please put her painting right in the center of the exhibition hall?
Just to give her one last beautiful memory. I’m begging you."
My heart softened back then. I swapped her painting into the prime spot.
I had no idea the painting was plagiarized straight from the internet. The original artist showed up at our office to sue us.
