From the back cover

In her first life, June watched her sister Jane swap their college acceptance letters, turning June's Harvard admission into Jane's. June screamed the truth, and her parents beat her, tied her, and sold her to a crippled widower named Hawkins, who locked her in a root cellar. She drowned herself, learning only as she died that she was never their blood, and so was treated like livestock.

Now June has returned to the day the letters arrive. Jane again forges the name, and their parents, Earl and his wife, celebrate Jane's crimson Harvard seal, slaughtering the hog and buying new clothes while June is mocked as a community-college failure. June lets the theft stand, saying nothing.

But Cody, the mayor's son she once loved, turns from her toward Jane, and the county hails Jane as its pride. June only smiles, cold and thin, waiting to see how Jane means to use the letter she stole.

Inside the book Opening excerpt

My reward was a beating from my parents.

"You're the older sister! Why can't you let her have this?
