The night before her wedding, Valerie receives a text from her fiancé Lucas: Sophie is pregnant, the baby is not his, but he must sign a marriage certificate with her so her conservative family will not disown her. He tells Valerie to postpone their wedding for three years, to stay silent, and to take the blame with their parents.

Valerie answers with a single word: okay. Then Lucas's childhood best friend posts a photo of intertwined hands, matching rings and an ultrasound, and their friends flood the comments with congratulations for a wedding that was supposed to be Valerie's. When she leaves a polite blessing, Lucas calls, furious, demanding she apologize to a sobbing Sophie and tell everyone she is the one who backed out.

After eight years, three terminated pregnancies and a startup built from a damp basement, Valerie finally stops waiting. She announces the cancellation herself, while Lucas has already blocked her to appease his new bride.
