Nora picks the pork fat off her plate at a family dinner, and her mother's fury follows her home. Accused of being ungrateful, Nora is beaten with a broom and then forced to eat three bowls of cold, greasy fat while her mother films her and mocks her to the family. The ordeal ends only when Nora's stomach is pumped at a hospital, where a nurse asks if she wants the police called.

Officers do come, but after a quiet word in the hallway, Nora's mother returns gentle and sweet, and the officers leave smiling. On discharge day she takes Nora not home but to Grandma's, where the family sits in judgment. There Nora learns the real price of forgiveness: the child support debit card her father gave her, which her mother seizes with a triumphant smirk.

On Monday, Nora waits at the school gate for the lunch her mother promised to deliver. When she finally opens the bento box, she is about to discover what her mother has packed inside.

The second we got home, Mom’s eyes turned bloodshot, and she blew up in my face.

"How did I raise such an ungrateful, wasteful brat?"

"When I was your age, I had to dig for wild greens just to survive!"

Yelling wasn't enough. She grabbed the broom and beat me with it, over and over.

She didn't stop until I was covered in bruises and blood, sobbing for mercy.

"Mom... please... I'll eat the fat."

Only then did she smile. Satisfied, she dragged out three massive mixing bowls piled high with cold, greasy pork fat and ordered me to finish every bite.
