Clementine's mother has made a game of testing her trust. A promised reward for good grades is withdrawn with a laugh; a promise to catch her from the high bleachers ends with a broken leg while her sister Lemon is caught safely. Each broken promise is called a lesson, and Clementine is told she is stupid for believing at all.

When she asks to be taken to the hospital, her parents accuse her of faking, of imitating her mother's own tricks, and warn that a liar will not be allowed home. Her sister mocks her pain. Only a kind stranger, Ms. Sarah, gets her to a doctor in time and stays by her bed.

After two months, Clementine returns home to a slap and an accusation worse than any before. Her mother refuses to believe the medical record, and the neighbours' contempt follows her still. The trust game continues, but Clementine has stopped playing.
